Nestled just across the highway from Downtown Dallas, The Cedars is a burgeoning entertainment district that’s fast becoming a must-visit for those seeking an authentic urban experience. Known for its eclectic mix of concert venues, dive bars, breweries, and art galleries, The Cedars offers a unique, hip industrial warehouse vibe that’s both inviting and inspiring. Here’s why you should consider adding this neighborhood to your Dallas itinerary.
A Hub for Music and Entertainment
The Cedars is where you’ll find some of the most vibrant music scenes in Dallas. From the historic Longhorn Ballroom to intimate venues like South Side Ballroom, the neighborhood caters to a wide array of musical tastes. Whether you’re into the raw energy of live rock bands, the smooth vibes of jazz, or the soulful rhythms of blues, The Cedars has a stage for every genre.
- Longhorn Ballroom – A legendary venue that has hosted everyone from Bob Wills to Merle Haggard, offering a taste of Texas music history.
- South Side Ballroom – Known for its eclectic lineup, this venue brings in both local talents and international acts.
Courtney Michalek with The Agency Dallas shares, “The Cedars has a vibrant, eclectic vibe, deeply inclusive of artists and art and culture, showcasing creativity and a strong sense of community.”
Dive Bars and Breweries
For those looking to unwind with a drink in hand, The Cedars doesn’t disappoint. Dive bars like Lee Harvey’s offer a nostalgic atmosphere where you can enjoy a cold beer and perhaps catch some live local music. Meanwhile, Four Corners Brewing Co. invites beer enthusiasts to savor craft beers in a setting that echoes the neighborhood’s industrial past, complete with brewery tours and special events.
- Lee Harvey’s – A dive bar with a vast patio, perfect for enjoying a laid-back evening.
- Four Corners Brewing Co. – A spot to taste local brews in a historic setting.
“This is one of my favorite questions because I feel like there are so many hidden gems right here in the neighborhood that I want everyone to experience! But, there are a few in particular that I frequent most often, and that would have to be Lee Harvey’s, Mike’s Gemini Twin, and then the Dive-In during the summertime, because they have an amazing pool!” says Courtney.
Art Galleries with Industrial Charm
The Cedars is also a haven for art lovers. The neighborhood’s warehouses have been transformed into galleries showcasing everything from contemporary art to local crafts. Ro2 Art Gallery and Cedars Art Gallery are prime examples, where visitors can explore works by emerging artists in an environment that celebrates the intersection of art and industry.
- Ro2 Art Gallery – Offers a platform for both emerging and established artists, with a focus on innovative art forms.
- Cedars Art Gallery – Known for its community engagement and support for local creatives.
Courtney notes, “Some of my favorite events of the year are Cedars Open Studios, where you can actually walk around and see the various art studios in the neighborhood and you get to meet the actual artists and see their work, and of course the Food and Wine festival that just happened at the Dallas Heritage Village.”
A Neighborhood on the Rise
The Cedars isn’t just about what’s here now; it’s about the promise of what’s to come. With new developments and revitalization projects, the area is poised for growth while maintaining its unique character. The Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park provides a historical counterpoint to the modern art scene, offering a glimpse into Dallas’ past with its collection of 19th-century buildings.
“I almost forgot to mention the amazing Deck Park that the city just approved that will span over the highway connecting downtown to The Cedars between Ervay & Harwood! To my understanding, it’s going to be like a sister to Klyde Warren Park. How cool is that?!” adds Courtney.
Transportation and Connectivity
The Cedars offers various transportation options, including public transit with its very own DART Rail stop called “Cedars Station.” Additionally, the city has approved a high-speed rail connecting DFW to Houston and other cities, with that station conveniently located in The Cedars. Aside from public transport, there are plenty of sidewalks and designated bike lanes, making it convenient for residents to access the area’s amenities and cultural events nearby.
Why Visit The Cedars?
- Unique Atmosphere: Experience the blend of old and new in a setting that’s both gritty and glamorous.
- Cultural Richness: From music to art, The Cedars is a cultural melting pot.
- Off-the-Beaten-Path: Avoid the typical tourist traps and discover a side of Dallas that’s truly authentic.
For those considering investing in The Cedars, Courtney advises, “I always tell people who are on the fence, find me another area this close to Downtown that gives the ability to hop on pretty much any highway you want, is walking distance to a plethora of bars and restaurants, including the Dallas Farmers Market, AND is surrounded by about 20 acres of rapidly occurring new development. For someone who is forward-thinking, it is a no-brainer really.”
The Cedars is rapidly establishing itself as one of Dallas’ coolest neighborhoods. Whether you’re a local looking for new haunts or a visitor eager to dive into Dallas’ less explored areas, The Cedars offers an unforgettable experience. So next time you’re in the city, make sure to cross the highway and explore this dynamic district where art, music, and history converge in the most captivating way.
