Dallas-Fort Worth is a region of distinct cities, school districts and commute corridors, and where you land depends on where you work and where your children will go to school. The Agency Dallas helps buyers relocating to Dallas-Fort Worth compare neighborhoods, time their purchase around Texas property tax rules, and close with confidence, often before the moving truck arrives.
Yes. Many of our buyers tour by video first, make one focused trip to see a short list, and handle much of the paperwork remotely. The key is lining up a local lender, an inspector and a title company early, and having an agent who walks each property on your behalf.

It follows the office. Our finance relocation guide maps major campuses to neighborhoods: Wells Fargo's Las Colinas campus in Irving holds about 4,500 employees, and JPMorgan Chase reports more than 17,000 employees in DFW, about 13,000 of them in Plano (Wells Fargo newsroom; JPMorgan, August 27, 2026). Downtown and Uptown offices point toward Highland Park, University Park, Preston Hollow and the high-rises. Plano and Legacy West point north, and the Westlake corporate campuses point toward Southlake and Westlake.

Most families start with the school district, because in Texas the address decides it. Highland Park ISD enrollment is address-based, and proof of residency requires a deed, closing statement or qualifying lease plus a current utility bill at the same address (HPISD Enrollment and Proof of Residency FAQ). In Southlake, Carroll ISD serves most of the city, but parts fall in Northwest, Keller and Grapevine-Colleyville ISDs (City of Southlake FY 2027 profile). Confirm the district for every specific property before you write an offer.

It comes down to lot size, commute direction and daily rhythm. In-town neighborhoods trade larger lots for proximity: the Town of Highland Park places itself about 3 miles north of downtown and about 2 miles from Love Field. Suburbs like Southlake, Plano, Frisco and McKinney offer newer homes and more space, with Southlake about 5 miles from DFW Airport and about 19 miles from both downtowns (City of Southlake FY 2027 profile). A reverse commute from an in-town home to a suburban office can work well, so test it.

Texas has no state personal income tax, and Proposition 4, approved 74% to 26% in November 2019, put a ban on one into the state constitution (Ballotpedia). Property taxes carry more of the load, and rates vary by city and school district. For 2025, Highland Park's combined rate was about $1.57 per $100 of taxable value (Dallas County Tax Office). Homestead eligibility is set by your status on January 1 (Texas Tax Code Section 11.42), so closing by December 31 and living in the home on January 1 matters.

Admission calendars run almost a year ahead of the start date, so families relocating for fall should begin the prior autumn. For fall 2027 entry, Hockaday's deadline for all grades is December 14, 2026, and St. Mark's and Hockaday both send decisions on March 12, 2027, per our private schools guide drawn from each school's admission pages. Testing usually includes the ISEE from about fifth grade up. Each school sets its own dates.

Yes, and some relocating buyers choose a ranch or acreage property as a primary home or a weekend place within driving distance of the city. Land purchases bring their own questions, including water, access, surveys, minerals and agricultural valuation, so they call for a different kind of diligence than a city home. The Agency Dallas has a statewide Land and Ranch Division for these purchases.

Texas gives new residents 30 days to register a vehicle and 90 days to get a Texas driver license, according to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. The license matters for property taxes too: Dallas CAD's homestead guidance says the address on your Texas license or ID must match the homestead address, so update it soon after you close.
If you close on January 2 or later, your first full homestead year generally moves out a year, because eligibility is set on January 1 (Texas Tax Code Section 11.42). There is an exception: if the prior owner did not claim a homestead that year, as with many new builds, a partial-year exemption may apply under Section 11.42(f).
Westlake Academy accepts applications from families outside the Town of Westlake from December 1 through January 31, with a lottery in mid-February, per its admissions page. Town residents are admitted once the Town approves their residency application. Late applications go to the bottom of the grade-level list, so families relocating mid-year should plan around that window.
